Oreodonts were pig-proportioned mammals found only in North America, 9-40 million years ago. Primaryily herbivores, the largest of the Oreodonts were only 3 feet long.

The number of Oreodont bone fossils found so far outnumber all other mammal finds combined!

Like Peccaries, Oreodont teeth were self sharpening, and may also have produced sounds for group communication.

The Fossil Gallery is closed for
renovations now through June 15.

It will re-open on June 16 as the newly
designed Mineral & Fossil Gallery. Plus we are
building a fluorescent mineral display
adjacent to the new Gallery.

There will be no admission charge to either exhibit.

Summer Hours: Open daily Father's Day to Labor Day, 10-5
School Year Hours: Open every weekend 10-5, plus major holidays
(see hours for detailed list)

The Fossil Gallery will wow children and adults alike. A 21 foot long Triceratops prorsus is the first glimpse of several sights, and only a fraction of the inventory in the Fossil Gallery, helping to make Nature’s Art the largest science and nature store in New England.
