Orpiment, an arsenic sulfide mixture, is almost always associated with Realgar. The name Orpiment comes from the Latin “auripigmentum” in reference to the minerals gold hue. Large deposits have been found in Mercur, Utah and in the Getchell gold mine in Nevada. As an ore of arsenic, orpiment is used in the tanning of hides to remove hair.

Realgar, an orange-red arsenic sulfide, is often mistaken for Cinnabar. Realgar is very unstable and turns into an orange dust when exposed to light. It’s name comes from the Arabic “rahj-alghar”, meaning “powder of the mine”. Realgar is found with orpiment near hot springs and low temperature hydrothermal veins.

Ancient Chinese admired Realgar’s red hue and would cement fragments into chunks for carving. All of these artifacts have been badly affected by time and light. Metaphysically, Orpiment is believed to stimulate the intellect, and its energy can elevate the studious nature. It is considered excellent for studying for exams.
